5 Ways To Enjoy Haggis this St Andrew’s Day

With St Andrews Day just around the corner (30 November 2021), here is your guide to serving our traditional Scottish haggis — including some creative alternatives.

1. Traditional

Enjoy our cannonball haggis the most classic way — alongside neeps (turnips) and tatties (potatoes), lashings of gravy and, of course, a dram of whisky.

2. Scotch Eggs

Despite what their name may suggest, Scotch eggs are not in fact Scottish. There are various beliefs around their origin but the most popular one is that they were first invented by London department store Fortnum & Mason in 1738. It seems that they were given their name due to the process of mincing the meat to go around the egg, known as ‘scotching’.

That said, we still thoroughly love this traditional snack in Scotland, particularly at a picnic. But you can also serve is as a starter or a main with a side of salad. We recommend Jamie Oliver’s recipe. Don’t forget to also pop in your shopping basket our free-range eggs.

3. Nachos

Invite your friends over for some fun-filled games, whisky-based cocktails and the perfect snack to share, nachos. Prepare the dish in the same way that you would a traditional version, topping the corn chips with guacamole, refried beans, jalapeños whilst replacing the mince meat with haggis.

4. Big Breakfast

Start the day right by grilling some haggis, black pudding, tattie scones, alongside other breakfast favourites, such as a fried egg (or two), mushrooms and baked beans. We’ll let you decide if brown or tomato sauce wins the battle of the sauces.

5. Toasted Sandwich

We’ve got your breakfast and dinner covered, so it makes sense that we include a traditional lunch option — with a twist. Layer up haggis, cheddar cheese, caramelised onion and mustard upon two thick slices of sourdough bread. Then pop it in a toastie maker or under the grill until golden brown on the outside and the cheese has melted.
