We catch up with Sydney local Nicola Miethke (@naturallynicola) to find out how she celebrates Burns Night.
Tell us about yourself?
I’m a Naturopath and Nutritionist in private practice in Sydney that focuses primarily on women’s health, specifically hormones and fertility, after having been through my own struggles when I was 22. I’ve been lucky enough to have just celebrated the arrival of my first child in October last year (a beautiful little girl called Freya) and so I am currently taking some time out to be a Mum!
Where are you from?
I sometimes wish this question had a more straightforward answer! I was born in Belgium (Brussels), grew up in Zimbabwe (Harare), went to high school in Scotland (Edinburgh), University in England (Oxford), University in Brisbane and now I have been living in Sydney for 5 years.
What does Burns Night mean to you?
I have such fond memories of celebrating Burns Night at school in Edinburgh when we would have the traditional affair in our school dining hall – from the foods to the poems to the Scottish country dancing. It was such a wonderful night! My dad’s side of the family is originally Scottish (my maiden name is Mackay) and so we have always loved taking part in all the traditional celebrations!
Favourite Scottish food?
Deep fried mars bar! Just kidding! Haggis – without a doubt!
How are you celebrating Burns Night this year?
We celebrated Burns Night a little early this year as I’m actually going to be New Zealand for a wedding on the 26th! We started with some cock-a-leekie (chicken and leek soup), had the most amazing haggis, tatties and neeps from David’s Larder and some whiskey spiked Cranachan pud for dessert! Delicious!!
